Meet Your Host

Hi! I'm Zoey, owner of The Black Salt and Mom to a little Aries kiddo. I went to school for fine art and painting and have worked as a paralegal, property manager, gallerist, psychic reader, and exhibiting artist. Since 2022, I have owned and operated The Black Salt, a craft cocktail bar that serves spells with cocktails. The apartment above the bar was my home and holds many special memories. Iā€™m so excited to share the space with guests visiting Hamtramck and Detroit! Let me know how I can make your stay magical!

The History

The building has a long history as a nightlife destination.

It was built in 1917 and opened as a neighborhood grocery market with apartments above. In 1921, it was registered as "Kolodziejczak Real Estate" and operated as a prohibition era speakeasy.

It has housed multiple long standing neighborhood bars over the decades, including "Club Florian" circa 1960-1980, "G's Place" circa 1980-1999. In the early 2000's, the building was turned into a 3 story goth night club called "Mephisto's," and the third floor was added as a VIP area.

In 2022, I purchased the building and converted the top two floors into my home while opening The Black Salt on the main floor. I was 8 months pregnant when the bar opened in March 2023. This is the home my daughter was raised in and we hold many cherished magical memories in the space.

Today, the space is a wonderful abode for those looking for an authentic Detroit experience. While the space has been updated for modern comfort, it remains a true home, furnished with family heirlooms and carefully curated pieces that add warmth and character.
